According to world health organisation life skills are the abilities for adaptive and positive behaviour that enables individuals to deal effectively with demands and challenges of everyday life. Life skills are simply a set of capabilities that provide field of adjustment and positive and helpful behaviour.
The basic set of life skills are:
Self Awareness
Ability to recognise own strengths and weaknesses to make the best utilisation of one’s own potential.
Creative Thinking
Creative thinking is the ability to look at things differently, and find new ways of solving problems.
Coping with Emotions
Managing our emotions properly and regulating our emotional reactions. It is done by determining the aptness of our emotional reactions.
Coping with Stress
Identifying what makes us stressed and what are the ways to counter or prevent those stresses.
Effective Communications
Expression of thoughts and feelings clearly in both verbal and non verbal language.
Empathy
Understanding other’s emotional states and perspectives without jumping to conclusions.
Problem Solving & Decision Making
Having an objective approach towards a problem. It is done by clearly defining the problem so that the solutions to that problem can be explored effectively. This life skill plays a very important role in our day to life and it is important that this skills is learnt in a manner that it becomes a natural way of approaching a problem.
Healthy Interpersonal Relationships
These skills are crucial for our growth. It includes- compassion, empathy, active listening, leadership, effective speaking, openness.
